Builders in Residence is a nonprofit residency redefining Southeast Asia's labour market — turning aspiring coders, designers, and thinkers into proven builders through immersive, startup-style work on projects the industry actually needs.

The moment

The greatest digital renaissance of our lifetime — and a generation locked out of it.

Artificial intelligence advances by the day. Software grows more capable, more addictive, more woven into ordinary life. What was hailed as humanity's great triumph has, for many, curdled into pessimism and resentment toward the very technology that built it.

Restructuring displaces the experienced. Graduates step from the lecture hall into a market with no room for the unproven. Breaking into a new arena feels impossible — not because the talent is missing, but because no one will let it build.

We exist to put a generation back in the arena — with the tools, the projects, and the proof to ride the next wave.

The model

Talent isn't the bottleneck. Opportunity is.

We gather builders across disciplines and backgrounds, and give them the one thing a résumé can't: a place to prove what they can make.

The environment

An immersive residency

A startup-style environment with real stakes, real deadlines, and real teammates. You don't study the work — you do it, surrounded by people doing the same.

The work

Industry-aligned projects

Briefs shaped with partners and grounded in what the market needs now. Every project is a chance to ship something that matters beyond the program.

The proof

Portfolios that prove

You leave with work that speaks louder than any line on a CV — shipped products, case studies, and a body of evidence that you can build.

The people

A community of builders

Coders, designers, and thinkers from every background, betting on each other. The network outlasts the season — and so does the momentum.

Focus Area

Four arenas worth building in.

Focus 01

Healthcare

Demand for care is outpacing the systems meant to deliver it — short-staffed clinics, fragmented records, specialists hours away. The problem is making quality care reachable, affordable, and intelligent.

Categories under this domain include
  • Telemedicine for Underserved Areas
  • AI-Powered Healthcare Administration
  • Early Disease Detection and Diagnostics
  • Mental Health Access and Treatment
  • Personalized Medicine and Genetic Testing
  • Disease Outbreak Monitoring
  • Low-Cost Medical Devices
  • Affordable Health Insurance and Financing
Focus 02

Climate Change

The region sits on the front line of a warming planet — rising seas, fiercer floods, harvests off their rhythm. Awareness isn’t the gap; usable tools and local adaptation are.

Categories under this domain include
  • Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Systems
  • Climate Risk Modeling for Insurance and Agriculture
  • Renewable Energy and Grid Storage
  • Low-Pesticide and Climate-Resilient Farming
  • Urban Flood and Drainage Management
  • Carbon Accounting and Offset Verification
  • Coastal Protection and Sea-Level Adaptation
  • Conservation and Biodiversity Monitoring
Focus 03

Infrastructure

Growth keeps running ahead of the rails beneath it. Payments, logistics, identity, and connectivity still leak time and money at every seam. The problem is the unglamorous foundation work.

Categories under this domain include
  • Digital Payments for the Unbanked
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Tracking
  • Digital Identity and Verification
  • Credit Scoring for People With No Credit History
  • AI-Powered Compliance and Back-Office Automation
  • Energy and Utility Infrastructure
  • Public Transit and Urban Mobility
  • Data Infrastructure and Cloud Tooling
Focus 04

Consumer

Hundreds of millions came online mobile-first, young, and multilingual — yet most products are built for someone else. The problem is experiences native to the region’s languages and habits.

Categories under this domain include
  • E-Commerce and Local Marketplaces
  • Social Media and Creator Tools
  • Affordable, AI-Native Software Alternatives
  • Online Learning and Upskilling
  • Ride-Hailing and Local Travel Services
  • Personal Finance and Savings Apps

About

A nonprofit for the next generation of builders.

Who we are

Builders in Residence is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to redefining Southeast Asia's labour market for a new generation of talent. In a cutthroat employment landscape, we help aspiring builders rediscover their potential through immersive, startup-style experiences — working on industry-aligned projects and building portfolios that prove themselves.

We gather talent across disciplines and backgrounds — people who showcase what they're capable of precisely when opportunities are limited. We are founder-led, mission-driven, and growing.

Our ethos

We are living through the greatest digital renaissance we could have imagined in our lifetime. Artificial intelligence advances by the day. Social media grows more addictive by design. Groceries arrive in ten taps, not ten errands.

Yet what was once hailed as humanity's great triumph has curdled, for many, into pessimism and resentment toward the very technology that built it. As people fall short or are displaced by restructuring, getting back on their feet to break into a new arena feels impossible — let alone for the young, ambitious graduate stepping hopefully into the job market for the first time.

So we took the opportunity to empower the creators, the coders, the designers, and the thinkers — to ride the next technological wave through an immersive environment built for one thing: to build.

What we stand for

Principles we build by.

01
Talent over title

Potential over pedigree

We bet on what people can make, not the names on their transcript. Talent is everywhere; opportunity is not.

02
Show, don't say

Proof over promises

The work is the argument. We measure ourselves in things shipped and builders launched, not slogans.

03
No black boxes

Build in the open

We learn fastest alongside others. Community, mentorship, and shared stakes are the method, not the perk.

04
Rooted, not generic

For the region

Built in and for Southeast Asia — for a labour market and a generation that deserve a better on-ramp to the future.

Apply

Come build in residence.

Applications are open on a rolling basis. We're looking for drive, curiosity, and a willingness to make things — from every discipline and background. There's no cost to take part.

What we look for
01

Drive

Evidence you make things and finish them — however small or rough.

02

Range

Coders, designers, writers, thinkers, organisers. Cross-discipline is a feature.

03

Hunger

People who showcase their potential exactly when opportunities are limited.

04

Curiosity

Asks questions before being asked to, and follows them past the obvious answer.

05

Coachability

Takes feedback as fuel, not a verdict on their worth.

06

Communication

Can explain what they built and why, to people who weren't in the room.
